LAWS ON THE COURT: NBA Edition, How To Earn Respect

Re·spect: a particular way of thinking about or looking at someone or something.

In this instance, how do you earn the respect from the NBA, when you haven’t made the playoffs in years, or you’ve made the playoffs but lost in the first round? Well, we all know it’s hard to earn the respect of someone of a higher power, no matter what your status is. The tough question is really, how. A man/woman asking for your father’s blessing to marry you. Tough question, you have to have confidence in yourself, before you go asking that question.

Respect is the high almighty power you achieve when you have the confidence, and the power to be on top. A few teams in the NBA have had respect for years. Chicago Bulls, even if they aren’t the number one team anymore, the respect has been grandfather’d since the Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman years. The Boston Celtics are another great example. They aren’t doing so well this year, they are re-building, but they earned their respect from Larry Bird, as well as Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce.

The Miami Heat came into power after LeBron James made his way over to the team. They gained their respect from other teams, winning 2 championships in a row. They are a power-house. The almighty Miami Heat, will be talked about for decades to come. When you have a squad complied of Chris Bosh (whose nothing without the others), Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, Chris “Birdman” Anderson and Ray Allen.

The Indiana Pacers are an excellent lesson, you didn’t really hear much of them, unless you count the famous brawl with Ron Artest..(err.. I mean Metta World Peace) going into the stands, and punching a fan, and winding a suspension along with Jermaine O’Neal. They have a new leader, Paul George, he’s pretty impressive. They made it into the playoffs last year, and gave the Miami Heat a run for their money. At one point, I thought they were going to be going into the finals. Game 7, was intense. They earned the league’s respect once again.

Refs don’t make this quest easy, if you’re not respected in the league, good luck getting respect from the refs. They can call you for a TF (technical foul) just by you looking at them funny. LeBron James can stick his tongue out at a ref, and he wouldn’t be called for a TF, though if your DeMar DeRozan, if you even shrug you shoulders, Hello TF! They even make up calls if you’re defending a team with the almighty power over the refs. Kyle Lowry can tell you how that feels. Offensive Foul? Really… Try wearing your glasses next time ref!

The question is still lingering in your mind of how teams like the Raptors, Pelicans, Kings, Bobcats will ever gain respect in this league. They will — but with time. They just have to get better, they need to make the playoffs, play like a team, and not succumb to negative talk.
