SBOTD Presents: Jay Flats, LA Kings In-Arena host
Sports Babe of the Day Presents: Jay Flats, In-Arena Host and Audience Warm-up, @JayFlats on Twitter
You may recognize this babe if you have ever attended a LA Kings or LA Galaxy game — and if you don’t like hockey or soccer you might recognize him if you ever went to a LIVE taping of American Idol, Dancing with the Stars or America’s Got Talent. Jay Flats is an in-arena host for the Kings, an in-stadium host for the Galaxy and a crowd warm-up comedian for some of the biggest shows on TV.
Jay is originally from Connecticut but currently lives in California pursuing his already extremely successful career. Over the years, Jay has had some interesting jobs which have lead him to where he is now. He found his first hosting/announcing job on Craigslist. Yes, you read it right — Craigslist. The job entailed traveling for a full year as the announcer for The Harlem Globetrotters. With the Globetrotters, Jay visited 12 different countries and announced in 4 different languages (I barely speak 2 languages so 4 is extremely impressive!)
Aside from his hosting jobs, Jay was also a stilt walker for 16 years (LOL> WHAT?!) He first got the job after telling a little white lie that he was an experienced stilt walker. Clearly the determined individual that he is, he strapped on a pair of stilts 15 minutes before auditions. Finally when Jay’s name was called to audition, he had already had his stilts on and was walking across the parking lot. The casting director then shouted, “Ok, you’re hired!” Pretty impressive. Recently, Jay has been warming up crowds for The Queen Latifah Show and X-Factor Auditions. He has also hosted the Ball Up Streetball Tour this year. Now let’s get to know this babe.
20 Questions with Jay Flats.
(1.) If you could tell your fans any three things about you, what would you want them to know?
I love what I do, I’m always striving for more and yes I am ‘that guy who does that thing on the jumbotron.’
(2.) Did you play sports growing up and if so what was your favorite?
Baseball, football, hockey, basketball, wrestling (not wwf) and track. But I always preferred kick ball.
(3.) If you could be a professional athlete, what sport would you want to play?
I would be a world class cliff diver or the 2nd most interesting man in the world.
(4.) What is your favorite twitter account to follow – sports or non-sports related?
I love following @baileylakings @lakings @lakingsicecrew @ohcarrlyn @rcofficial @espn @vmanning1 @sportscenter
(5.) If you could spend one day with anyone in the world – dead or alive, who would it be and what would you want to do?
My grandfather Ellsworth Batty, whom I never got to meet because he passed away before I was born. I would go anywhere he wanted to go and just listen to all the stories I was never able to hear from him when he was around.
(6.) If you could be a fly on the wall in any sports locker room, which locker room would it be in and why?
I would have loved to been a fly on the wall in the Canucks locker room after Jarett Stoll sniped the game 5 OT goal to win round 1 of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs this year. Bouncing the President’s Trophy winners out of the post season, then I would have flown right into the Kings locker room for the celebration.
(7.) If you could be a commentator for any sporting event, what would it be and why?
I would want to be the play by play commentator for the STANLEY CUP FINAL! I have aspirations to announce play by play for the LA KINGS!
(8.) How old were you when you realized you belonged behind a mic entertaining people?
I was really young. I remember my elementary school teachers telling me to stop acting out and goofing off. At the time they didn’t know I was just studying the art of entertainment.
(9.) Growing up, were there any sports broadcasters you really looked up to and aspired to be like?
I loved listening to PHIL RIZZUTO from the Yankees! ‘HOLY COW, The Money Store Does It Again!!!’
(10.) What advice would you give to your 15 year old self?
Don’t let anyone tell you that your goals are out of your reach! Focus on your dreams!
(11.) What is your most memorable moment as a sports fan and why?
Riding in the 2012 LA KINGS Championship Parade with Dustin Brown, Jonathan Quick, Anze Kopitar, Matt Greene, Dean Lombardi, Tim Leiweke with the Stanley Cup, Campbell Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy. As we turned down Figueroa and we saw the beginning of 250,000 people a tear fell from my eye. Epic!
(12.) Futbol or football?
Used to be Football, but I’ve been in LA for 12 years without it. So now it’s futbol! Go Galaxy!
(13.) Twitter or Facebook?
Instgram does both for you!
(14.) What is the most played song on your iPod?
Lately it’s ‘I thank you’ by Sam and Dave!
(15.) What is your favorite movie?
Back To The Future!
(16.) You have worked as a TV audience warm up comic for Dancing with the Stars, who is your pro dancer crush?
I really like Ashley Galvin from SYTYCD and Chelsea Hightower from DWTS.
(17.) For all our female readers, are you single or taken and what do you look for in a girl?
Recently single. I’m looking for someone who is passionate about what they do as much as I am!
(18.) What is your idea of a perfect date?
A date where at the end neither of us wants to leave because we don’t want to be anywhere else in the world.
(19.) Who do you want to see featured on Sports Babe of the Day?
Bailey the LA KINGS mascot!
(20.) How do you want to be remembered?
As a guy who loved life, his work and his family! Also a great break-dancer in his time.
Well ladies you are all in luck since Jay is single. He is funny, determined, passionate, a world traveler and speaks 4 languages! What a package! Jay is living proof, that if you want to do something as long as you believe you could do it and put your heart into it, you can. We will all be listening when you get your chance to be the play-by-play announcer for the LA Kings. Make sure to follow Jay on Twitter @JayFlats. Thanks for the interview BABE!
