SBOTD Presents: Melissa Fiore, BDB Writer
Hi! My name is Melissa Fiore and sports are my thing. I grew up just north of Boston and still live there today. Growing up I played softball and hockey. Let me clarify that actually, I tried to play hockey but when you go to take a shot on net and end up on your stomach sliding into the boards I don’t think it’s meant to be. With some great coaching from my dad, and a few others, I was able to turn into a pretty good softball player. Still love getting in games when I can and hitting the batting cages. Now I leave the skating to the professionals and focus on covering the great game of hockey. Over the past couple years I have grown to love golf as well. My dad and I have been lucky enough to go to the Deutsche Bank Championship for the last 3 years and love every minute of it.
I come from a big Italian/Irish family. So that means at holidays there are never just a couple of people at dinner and there is always enough food to feed an entire army. Out of all of the cousins that I have there are only a few of us girls so naturally we’re all pretty close. I have 2 partners in crime that are always willing to go to a game with me, or spend a long weekend in Chicago watching the Blackhawks take on the Bruins. I love having a big family and wouldn’t want it any other way!
23 QUESTIONS WITH MELISSA FIORE:
(1.) In three words, how would your friends describe you?
Funny, Driven, Genuine
(2.) Who are your favorite athletes or sports teams to watch?
While I try to pay attention to most of the NHL, the teams that I actually root for are the Blackhawks and Penguins. Favorite NHLers to watch right now are James Neal from Pittsburgh and the Bruins young rookie Dougie Hamilton. Big Red Sox and New England Patriots fan as well. If I had to pick an all-time favorite athlete it would be John Valentin of the Red Sox.
(3.) Peanut butter: crunchy or smooth?
Usually smooth but mix in the crunchy every now and then.
(4.) I love SBOTD but I pay my bills by:
Covering the Bruins for a hockey website.
(5.) What’s in your DVD collection and/or what’s your favorite book?
My DVD collection is pretty limited, but I definitely try to stay up to speed with the popular new movies that come out. Top 2 all-time favorite movies are Field of Dreams and Miracle. If I’m talking about books I guess this is the time that I admit to reading all of the Twilight books. Judge away.
(6.) Growing up, did you have a role model or someone who inspired you to be who you are?
A huge role model in my life has been my grandfather. He is such an amazing man and I would be lucky to be half the person that he is. Still to this day one of my favorite things to do is to sit and talk hockey with him. He is always brutally honest with his view of the game and it is one of the best opinions you’ll ever hear.
(7.) Who would you bring back from the dead and what would you say to them?
Bringing people back from the dead kind of creeps me out a little bit; I try not to stay away from it.
(8.) What song do you sing at karaoke – or would you sing if you had to?
Without a doubt it’s The Sugarhill Gang – Rapper’s Delight!
(9.) If you won a million dollars in a lottery, what would you do with it?
I would take care of all my bills, then probably my parents too. I’d buy a nice new car and take a vacation somewhere that has a beach, sun and endless umbrella drinks.
(10.) If you could interview any athlete, who would it be and why?
I’d really just like to interview any hockey player and get them to use a hockey cliché during the interview because that never happens. (Sarcasm inserted)
(11.) If you could be a fly on the wall in any sports team locker room, which one would it be and why?
With all the behind the scenes productions (24/7, Inside the Room, Oil Change) that happen now a days you get to see everything that happens, so we can leave the flies out of it.
(12.) Is there a motto, saying or core truth you try to live by?
Computers crash, people die, relationships fall apart. The best we can do is breath and reboot. ~ Carrie Bradshaw
(13.) Are you single, dating, or locked down?
Single and ready to mingle! Do people still say that??
(14.) What’s your idea of the perfect date?
Going to a nice dinner is always good, but I’d prefer to do something different. Any kind of sporting event is always going to be good with me. If we’re talking a first date, anything but the movies!
(15.) What has been your proudest accomplishment to date and what are your goals for the future?
Proudest accomplishment I have so far is just being a good genuine person and someone who my younger cousins can look up to. Also finding a career that I absolutely love and pursuing it.
(16.) Name something you do when you’re alone that you wouldn’t do in front of others.
Turn the music up really loud then proceed to pop, lock and drop it.
(17.) What are your three biggest pet peeves?
People that snap their gum constantly, slow drivers, people who chew with their mouth open
(18.) If you had a round trip ticket to any destination in the world, where would you go and why?
For 2 reasons I would go to Saint Tropez. The amazing beaches are the first reason, and second reason being any place that gets into that many rap songs has to be a good destination to visit.
(19.) What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Enjoy having no worries, bills or responsibilities because real life happens sooner than you think. Oh and boys get better with age too. Well some do…
(20.) What’s your most memorable moment as a sports fan?
Being alive to see all 4 major sports teams in Boston win a championship.
(21.) What are your guilty pleasures?
Cheesy romance novels and ice cream.
(22.) Name five items you couldn’t live without.
iPhone, Bottle of water, a good hat, my Blackhawks sweatshirt, a supportive pillow
(23) What do you want to be remembered for?
I want to be remembered for being someone who can always be counted on, a good role model to my younger cousins. Then of course the girl who seriously knows her hockey.
Writing and hockey have become a huge passion for me and I’m looking forward to sharing that with all you babely readers! You can find me on twitter @melfior829 so stop by and say hi!
