1. Who are you?
My name is Miranda Furtado and I’m the creator and editor in chief of Babes Dig Balls — or as the writers have coined me — the “Babely Boss.” Haha.

2. How did BDB start?
Well, BDB kind of started as a joke, to be completely honest!
After going through the interviewing process with an NHL team, I realized that I needed to have more sports on my résumé. Since I have a publishing and broadcasting background, I figured that I’d take the initiative to start a funny Tumblr account, so I’d have something to show potential employers, if needed.
Needless to say, it snowballed. I ended up purchasing Sports Babe of the Day, and, well, as they say, the rest is history. Just over a year later, here we sit with 45+ writers across North America!

3. How is BDB different than other sports sites?
Although BabesDigBalls.com is completely female-run, we differentiate ourselves from other female sports sites because its not just by females for females. It’s really about giving females a voice in a male-dominated industry.

4. The site run completely by women. How did that idea come about?
It started out of necessity. Getting experience for a job is a double edge sword. You need experience to get a job, but without a job, how do you get experience? On top of that, getting into the sports industry as a female is tough. I really just put the two together and found a pile of ladies with the same end goals.

5. Were sports a thing you were always interested in growing up, or did that develop later on?
Always — but in a different way. I grew up in the country so pond hockey and road hockey were always a staple. But I really had a passion for extreme sports. I had a dirt bike by the age of 8 or 9 (a little Honda 50 — that thing could rip!) and when I got older, I turned to skateboarding and snowboarding. I actually taught snowboarding for about 5 years before moving to Whistler to live out the good ol’ dream. **Miranda also played hockey and soccer for her school teams.**

6. Was/Is there a particular woman in sports that you look at as a role model? Someone that maybe you try to model your work in sports media after?
Not really, to be honest. It’s not that I don’t think anyone is worthy, but I’m exhausted of trying to “fit in” or be a certain way. I think a big reason why Babes Dig Balls has such a following is because I’ve based it on myself and have purposely tried to break the mold. It’s different. It’s unique and it works.

7. Other than sports, tell us what else you are passionate about. What else drives you?
Work. Is that lame? I spend almost all of my time working on Babes Dig Balls. I have ADD, so my brain never really shuts off. I’m always concocting something new. (Insert evil laugh here MUAHAHAHAAA!)
Other than BDB, though, I’m obsessed with my dog. Admittedly, it’s gotten to a pathetic point. Shameless plug: you can follow him on Instagram @ElvisWrestley.

Yeah, it’s THAT bad.

8. What is one “off the wall” crazy fact about Miranda Furtado?
I really like sandwiches and have serious pet peeve with bad “sandwich artists” at Subway. If you call yourself an “artist”, at least make sure the toppings stay ON the sub. I work hard for my money, too!

9. What did you want to be when you were 10?
When I was 10 I wanted to be in broadcasting.

10. What are you most proud of?
Being on national TV. Having been born with a cleft palate and dealing with a speech impediment for years has made this a career highlight for me. Not for the purpose of fame or bragging rights — but more because I managed to beat the odds and overcome a challenge to get there.

11. What is your advice to others who want to follow in your footsteps?
My advice to is just like Nike — just do it.
