SBOTD Presents: Sammy Hill, BDB Writer
Hey! I’m Sammy Hill and what you really need to know about me is that I love sports, especially hockey! I dream of putting a larger spotlight on junior hockey and giving the young guns with NHL dreams the credit and recognition that they deserve!
22 QUESTIONS WITH SAMMY HILL:
(1.) In three words, how would your friends describe you? Driven. Impatient. Sincere.
(2.) Who are your favourite athletes or sports teams to watch? My favourite team to watch is my Kelowna Rockets of the WHL. I’ve had season tickets for 12 years and I don’t know what I’ll do when I move away from them! I’ve also been a long time Colorado Avalanche fan. Some of my favourite athletes are Tyson Barrie, Rory McIllroy, and Gabriel Landeskog.
(3.) Peanut butter: crunchy or smooth? Absolutely smooth, no question about it.
(4.) I love BDB but I pay my bills by: Working my yoga pants.. as an educator at Lululemon! I also write the Style Page for the community newspaper and am working towards my business degree.
(5.) What’s in your DVD collection and/or what’s your favourite book? My favourite movie would have to be Remember the Titans. I could watch it over and over! I’m that nerd who reads business books in my spare time. Why We Buy and any customer service books by Disney really get me going. My fave would have to be ESPN: Those Guys Have All the Fun, although it takes years to get through.
(6.) Growing up, did you have a role model or someone who inspired you to be who you are? I would have to say that both of my parents are my role models and they each inspire me in different ways. I’m inspired by my mom’s strength and drive. I’ve always wanted to have success like my mom has. My dad inspires me with his kind heart and love for his family. I admire those qualities in them!
(7.) Who would you bring back from the dead and what would you say to them? I don’t think that I would bring anyone back. Everything happens for a reason right?
(8.) What song do you sing at karaoke – or would you sing if you had to? Party Up by DMX. It’s a given when my friends and I get together!
(9.) If you won a million dollars in a lottery, what would you do with it? This is a tough one! I would probably buy a house first and then make sure that my family is set up with everything that they could want. They have done a lot for me and deserve to be paid back tenfold.
(10.) If you could interview any athlete, who would it be and why? Gabe the Babe Landeskog, because of all that he has accomplished in his mere 20 years – Calder Trophy winner, youngest NHL captain in history, he has an app… and he’s a hot piece of man, duh.
(11.) If you could be a fly on the wall in any sports team locker room, which one would it be and why? Minnesota Wild. Why you ask? Three words: Dany f***ing Heatley.
(12.) Is there a motto, saying or core truth you try to live by? A saying that I love came up in a Lululemon training session; “It’s a practice”. This saying reminds me that it is nearly impossible to make something perfect and that you’re always just practicing. It reminds me not to put so much pressure on myself.
(13.) Are you single, dating, or locked down? What do you notice first about the opposite sex? Single. The first thing that I notice about the opposite sex is whether they can keep up a conversation with me or not! I’m also a total sucker for a baby face.
(14.) What’s your idea of the perfect date? My idea of a perfect date would be dinner and a game; hockey, baseball, even a friendly, yet competitive golf game between the two of us.
(15.) What has been your proudest accomplishment to date and what are your goals for the future? My proudest accomplishment to date would probably have to be buying myself a brand new Jeep Wrangler all on my own! Seeing that money leave my account was rough, but knowing that all of my hard work had paid off was an awesome feeling! My goals for the future are to finish my business degree, move to Toronto and get a diploma in sports journalism and broadcasting. After that I will be on the hunt for internships and jobs that will get me on the right track to one day working in media relations with the CHL, and from there, who knows! You may even see me on Sportscentre one day ;)
(16.) Name something you do when you’re alone that you wouldn’t do in front of others? Talk to myself! I do this all the time when I’m alone!
(17.) What are your three biggest pet peeves? 1. When people play games rather than being up front. 2. When people complain about their lives and don’t do anything to make things better. 3. Writer’s block!
(18.) If you had a round trip ticket to any destination in the world, where would you go and why? I think I would like to go to Russia, the second biggest hotbed for hockey talent!
(19.) What advice would you give to your 16 year old self? It’s going to get better and take advantage of every opportunity!
(20.) What’s your most memorable moment as a sports fan? The 2004 Mastercard Memorial Cup Championship. It was hosted in my hometown Kelowna, BC and my beloved Kelowna Rockets won it that year. It was an experience that I will never forget!
(21.) What are your guilty pleasures? Sour candies and lip gloss. I’m seriously addicted to both!
(22.) What do you want to be remembered for? I want to be remembered for making a positive impact on the junior hockey world and for being a kind and loving person!
