Much like the NHL, the American Hockey League has its own trade deadline which took place this past Wednesday. There was less dramatics than the NHL deadline day, but the league still saw some movement.

The Rochester Americans gained some depth on defense when they acquired Nick Petrecki on loan from the Worcester Sharks.

Petrecki, who played college hockey for Boston College, has spent his five year AHL career in Worchester.

The Springfield Falcons also picked up some defense when they traded forward Jeremy Langlois to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for defenseman Dallas Jackson.

Langlois has spent the most of this season with the Falcons ECHL affiliate, the Evansville IceMen.

The Portland Pirates gained two new additions to their team on Wednesday. Defenseman Cade Fairchild was assigned to the Pirates after he was picked up by the clubs parent team, the Phoenix Coyotes. Fairchild comes over from the St. Louis Blue organization. The Pirates also acquired right winger Sebastian Stalberg on loan from the San Jose Sharks. Stalberg is in his third AHL season, all of which he has played in Worchester, the Sharks AHL affiliate.

The Hershey Bears and the Adirondack Phantoms swapped forwards on Wednesday on a loan basis. The Bears acquired forward Kris Newbury from the Philadelphia Flyers, parent club to the Phantoms, while the Phantoms have picked up forward Derek Whitmore on loan from Hershey.

When players are loaned to other teams, the original team still assumes and owns the player contract. In the case of Petrecki, the San Jose Sharks still control his contract. One may as why a team would loan to another with nothing in return.

Players often get loaned to other AHL teams for a variety of reason. The NHL team might want their prospects to have a better chance of AHL playoff experience so they work a deal out with other General Managers. Using Petrecki as an example, he would not be eligible to be called up by the Buffalo Sabres, parent team to the Rochester Americans and he would need to be loaned back to Worcester is for some reason San Jose wanted to call him up.

Confused yet? That’s okay, generally this stuff can get jumbled and has a lot of different levels.
