SIX PACKS ON ICE: NHL recap from Wednesday Feb. 13, 2013
A fairly quiet night in terms of the schedule Wednesday with only 3 game taking place, but some big things went down once the pucks were finally dropped.
Ottawa Senators vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
The Ottawa Senators went into Wednesday night’s game against the Penguins hoping to force another loss in the mini losing streak that Pittsburgh has been on. The hopes of that happening drastically diminished when late in the second period Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson suffered a lacerated left Achilles after getting tangled up along the boards with Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke and Cooke’s skate coming down right on Karlsson’s leg. Karlsson will need season ending surgery to repair the injury. Pittsburgh was able to tie the score at 2 in the second period with an absolute snip from James Neal giving him a league leading 6th power play goal. Neal added his second of the night early in the third to put the Pens up for good with the final score being 4-2. Sidney Crosby tallied his 400th assist on Neal’s first goal earning the nights #2 star with a goal and 2 assists.
St Louis Blues vs. Detroit Red Wings
The Blues took on the Red Wings Wednesday night looking to snap a 5 game losing streak. It got off to a rough start for the Blues when goalie Jake Allen, who was making his first career NHL start, let in the first shot he faced. The Blues were able to pull it together and had 3 consecutive goals to take the lead in the game, but Pavel Datsyuk put in a bank shot off the goalie in the third period to tie it up and force OT. Just 52 seconds into overtime Alex Steen was able to put in a loose puck giving St Louis the win and ending their losing streak. With the loss, the Red Wings 3 game win streak ended.
Dallas Stars vs. Calgary Flames
The Stars traveled up to Calgary to take on the Flames Wednesday in the first meeting of the year between the two teams. Calgary started the game getting 4 goals from 4 different players in the first period alone. Dallas tried to hang in there adding 2 goals from captain Brenden Morrow in the second period but the Flames countered with their own 2 goals in that period as well. Calgary proved to be just too much for the Stars when Mike Cammalleri potted his 3 goal of the night for the hat trick making it the 200th goal of his career. The Stars 4 game win streak was snapped with the final score being 7-4 in favor of the Flames.
Ill leave you with a couple of pictures that the Associate Press was able to capture of Erik Karlsson just after suffering the season ending Achilles injury tonight. Tough images to look at for not only Senators fans, but hockey fans in general, as Karlsson was poised to have another great season.
