Native to British Columbia, Sarah Kaufman grew up as a dancer, but used her coordination and fancy footwork to help her mixed martial arts career. Sarah fights in the bantamweight division (135 pounds) and was the first Strikeforce Bantamweight champion and the only Hardcore Championship Fighting Women’s Bantamweight Champion. When she’s not training for her debut in the UFC on October 19th, she’s coaching 20 classes a week at ZUMA Martial Arts. She loves a good reality singing competition, her dog Rhino and hates country music. We got to learn a bit more about this formidable fighter below.
Oh, she’s doing great now. I don’t know what happened. The other dog just came out of his house and went right for her. What makes a dog want to attach another dog for no reason? I’m just glad she’s ok.
2. What sports did you participate in growing up and how did that influence you to get into MMA professionally?
I tried a lot of different sports in elementary and middle school, but i was in dance so I didn’t have much time for anything else. One day a mixed martial arts school opened next to where I danced. I tried it and fell in love.
3. How would you describe yourself in three words?
Down to earth.
4. If we raided your fridge right now, what would we find?
Not much, vegetables, eggs, fruit and my favorite cherry jello.
5. Who was your role model growing up?
Teachers I had growing up.
6. If you were a Ninja Turtle which one would you be?
Donatello, but I did like them all.
7. If you weren’t fighting, what do you see yourself doing?
Teaching. I love the sport so if I wasn’t fighting I’d still be teaching.
8. Who is your favorite fighter to watch?
9. What is a typical day like for you?
7 am wake up and wither go to ZUMA Martial Arts to practice or go lift weights, teach 5-7 classes(wrestling
, jujitsu, muay thai and women’s kickboxing). I do office work or clean the gym and after that start training at 8 pm. Get home around 10 pm for dinner and bed. Start all over the next day.
10. How do you mentally prepare for a fight? Do you have any prefight rituals?
I don’t really. Fighting is the fun part. Training is where it is hard. There is one day of every camp that is just horrible. I feel I can’t do anything, nothing goes right. Once I get there I know I’m ready.
11. Is there any specific win or loss that sticks out to you?
Marloes Coenen, I just didn’t preform how I can.
12. Do you have any guilty pleasures that we should know about?
Reality Competitions. Singing shows, and I hate to say American’s Next Top Model. It’s fun to see how they get the shots.
13. If we were to look on your iPod, what would the top 3 songs be?
That’s tough. I have a good mix, Bush, The Kill, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, some 80s, and 90s. NO country! I despise it.
14. If you could visit anywhere in the world at this very moment, where would you go and why?
I’m not a big traveler. Astoria and I do like to go to Albuquerque to train
15. Up until this point, what is your proudest achievement?
A full scholarship to the University of Victoria.
16. What advice would you give anyone with aspirations of being a professional MMA fighter or any other professional sport for that matter?
You have to love it. You should never start a sport to just ‘go pro’. Training is hard and that is what you do all the time. To succeed you have to love the sport your in.
17. We always ask for our readers- are you single, dating, or locked down? What’s your idea of the perfect date?
Single. I’m not impressed with when a guy spends a lot of money, so something low key and casual. Something creative, just hanging out.
18. How would you like to be remembered?
As a pro athlete. Always try to myself. Someone who didn’t change for anyone.
19. Who would you like to see as the next Sports Babe of the Day?
Rugby women. Their sport is just crazy!
